The real differences are a guide or no guide, where you start, and how long you
have the ski. Every
listing asks for a driver of 18 or over, and the boater card rule applies to all of them.
Each listing states free cancellation up to 24 hours before. Several take a
security hold or
refundable deposit at check-in.
Where you actually ride
You are not choosing a jet ski. You are choosing the water.
Destin sits between two very different waters. To the north is Choctawhatchee
Bay, about 129 square miles of
sheltered water. To the south is the open Gulf of America (formerly the Gulf
of Mexico). The only way between them is
East Pass, the inlet beside Destin, with Norriego Point guarding the
channel into Destin Harbor.
Crab Island is the reason most rides point north: a shallow sandbar just north
of the Marler Bridge, at the
mouth of the bay, that you can only reach by boat or jet ski. The bay is also home
to its own resident bottlenose
dolphins. So the question is less which brand of ski than which water, which dock,
and whether a guide leads the way.

Jet skiing in Destin, explained
Search for a Destin jet ski and you get two different products under one name:
guided rides that follow
a leader to the dolphins or Crab Island, and rentals that hand you a ski for a set time.
Both come with Florida paperwork
that catches visitors out at the dock. This is how to tell them apart and pick the one
that fits your day.
Guided ride or rental?
On a guided ride you still drive your own ski, but you follow a guide in a small group: up to
six on the Okaloosa
Island tours and up to eight on the Book the Coast tours from Destin Harbor. The guide
picks the route, knows where the
dolphins tend to be and sets the pace in the busy water. On a rental you choose the pace
yourself, but only inside the
area the operator allows, and one listing says its skis are set up to stop you going too
far or too close to others.
If you have never driven a jet ski, a guided ride is the gentler first hour. If you
already know what you are doing,
a rental gives you more time on the throttle for the same afternoon.
Florida requires a briefing before every rental: handling, right of way, local
waters and emergencies.
The paperwork that decides whether you drive
Florida's boater education rule applies to anyone born on or after 1 January 1988 who drives
a vessel with 10
horsepower or more, and every rental ski is above that. You need the Florida Boating
Safety Education ID Card, an
accepted card from another state that meets NASBLA standards, or the FWC Temporary
Certificate. The temporary
certificate is an online exam of 25 questions with 19 needed to pass, and it is valid for
90 days in Florida only, so
it is worth doing on your phone before you reach the dock. On top of that, every listing
here asks for a driver of 18
or over with photo ID, even though Florida law lets 14-year-olds operate their own
watercraft: a rental company may
not rent one to anyone under 18.
The honest small print: most rental skis are two-seaters with a weight
limit per ski, and the
limit counts everyone on board: 400 lb on the Okaloosa Island listings, 450 lb in Fort
Walton Beach and 485 lb on the
harbor Waverunner rental. Two adults can go over it. Check before you book one ski for
two.
Two people, one ski
Riding two up is how most couples and parents do it, and because a rental is priced per ski,
the passenger
shares the cost of the ski. The driver wears the engine cut-off lanyard, both riders wear
a non-inflatable life jacket, and
the passenger holds on. Children can ride behind an adult driver from the minimum age each
listing sets: 8 on the
Destiny Water Adventures rides, 6 on the Book the Coast tours and 5 on the harbor
Waverunner rental, which also lists
one adult with two children as an option.
Two up on one ski: the lanyard stays on the driver, and the weight limit
counts both riders.
Dolphins, Crab Island and the weather
Choctawhatchee Bay has its own resident bottlenose dolphins, and NOAA asks everyone on the
water to stay at least
50 yards away, to watch for no more than 30 minutes and never to chase or feed them. A
good guide keeps the group
back and lets the dolphins come or go. Crab Island, the sandbar just north of the Marler
Bridge, is the other big
draw: the water there is shallow enough to stand in, and guides describe it as clearest on
the incoming tide. Plan
around the weather too. Summer thunderstorms tend to build in the late afternoon, and the
NWS advice is simple: if
you can hear thunder, get off the water. A morning ride is the safer bet from June to
September.

How much does it cost to ride a jet ski in Destin?
It depends on four things: how long you ride, whether it is a guided tour or a
self-drive rental, how many skis you need (the price is per ski, and most
rental skis take two people), and the extras each listing adds or leaves out,

If you were born on or after 1 January 1988, yes: you need the Florida Boating

Where can I rent a jet ski in Destin?
The listings here start from three places: Destin Harbor (Harbor Blvd and the
Destin Marina on Calhoun Ave), the beach on Okaloosa Island on the west side
of East Pass, and Fort Walton Beach on Miracle Strip Parkway. The harbor and
Okaloosa Island are both close to Crab Island.
Can two people ride one jet ski?
Yes. The rental skis on these listings are two-seaters, with a limit per ski: 400
lb on the Okaloosa Island listings, 450 lb in Fort Walton Beach and 485 lb (or

How old do you have to be to drive a jet ski in Destin?

Yes. Crab Island is a shallow sandbar just north of the Marler Bridge, reachable

Is 70 mph fast on a jet ski?
Very. Industry sources describe an informal agreement to keep production personal
watercraft to about 65 mph, and a rental ski may be set to go slower than
that. No stock jet ski reaches 100 mph.
What is the difference between a jet ski and a WaveRunner?
The name. Jet Ski is a Kawasaki trademark, WaveRunner is Yamaha's and Sea-Doo is
BRP's; Florida law calls them all personal watercraft. Several listings here
simply say jet ski for whatever model they rent.
Are there big waves in Destin?
The bay side, where Crab Island is, is sheltered and generally calmer than the
open Gulf. Conditions change daily, so check the NWS Mobile beach and marine
forecast, which also gives the rip current risk.
Can you ride a jet ski in Destin at night?
No. Florida law bans personal watercraft from half an hour after sunset to half
an hour before sunrise. In summer, afternoon thunderstorms are the other clock
to watch: if you hear thunder, head in.
