What is Crab Island in Destin?

A submerged sandbar at the mouth of Choctawhatchee Bay, just north of the Marler Bridge on the Okaloosa Island side of East Pass. It formed from sand dredged out of East Pass.

Choctawhatchee Bay covers about 129 sq mi in Okaloosa and Walton counties, and East Pass, also called Destin Pass, is its only outlet to the Gulf. Crab Island sits where the bay meets the pass, just inside the US-98 William T. Marler Bridge, which links Destin with Okaloosa Island.

Its origin is dredge spoil from East Pass, which is why it is a broad, shallow sand flat rather than an island with a shore. On the Destin side of the pass, Norriego Point is the natural sand feature that protects the boat channel into Destin Harbor.

How deep is the water at Crab Island?

Typically about 1 to 5 ft, varying with the tide. The clearest water is on the incoming, rising tide up to high slack.

No official depth survey was found, so treat the 1 to 5 ft range as a guide rather than a chart figure. The tide matters for two reasons: clearer water comes in with the rising tide, and the water is shallower on a low tide. Idle in slowly, and follow the depth guidance from your pre-ride briefing, which by Florida law has to cover local water depths and hazards.

Can you get to Crab Island without a boat?

No. It is reachable only by watercraft, such as a boat, a jet ski, a paddlecraft or a water taxi, and swimming across the channel is not advised.

There is no walking route onto the sandbar. Also note that on the Okaloosa Island side, Eglin AFB's West Pass Beach and its parking area at the west end of the Marler Bridge are closed to all public access. Eglin's waterway permit rules, in force since February 2025, cover its own restricted shoreline waterways; East Pass and Crab Island are not on that list.

If nobody in your group can drive a ski, the glass-bottom dolphin cruise runs through Destin Harbor and East Pass with views of the bay, though its listing does not mention a stop at Crab Island.

Who manages Crab Island?

Okaloosa County and the National Park Service. The county describes it as national seashore waters over state-owned submerged land, and commercial operators need authorization from both.

The county rules on commercial activity at Crab Island come from Ordinance 18-19 as updated by 20-03, and Ordinance 19-06 sets restricted areas for Destin Harbor, East Pass and Sandpiper Cove. Local news reported that the county voted in May 2025 to remove the Crab Island safety corridor, the line of buoys set up under an earlier emergency ordinance.

The Okaloosa Island rental listing also notes a safety feature on its skis that keeps riders from going too far or too close to others, so the riding area is limited. Ask at check-in how that applies to a Crab Island visit.

How should you ride and anchor near the crowds?

Come off plane well before the crowd, move through at slow speed or idle, give flags and emergency vessels the required room, and anchor where you will not drift into others.

• Slow Speed - Minimum Wake means fully off plane and completely settled into the water. Idle Speed - No Wake means no faster than needed to keep steerageway and headway.
• Florida law requires slow speed, minimum wake within 300 ft of an emergency vessel with its lights on, and within 300 ft of a construction vessel or barge showing an orange flag.
• Stay at least 100 ft from a divers-down flag in rivers, inlets and navigation channels, which includes East Pass, and 300 ft in open water.
• Weaving through congested traffic and swerving at the last moment are treated as reckless PWC operation.
• On a guided tour, follow the guide's line in and out. On a rental, Luther's listing offers an anchor on request.

What happens if a thunderstorm comes in?

Head in. The National Weather Service advises boaters to get out of the water and off small boats, and Florida's emergency management agency says that if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck.

NWS Mobile says storms here typically form in the late afternoon and evening but can happen at any time, and Florida's coastal areas average about 80 to 90 thunderstorm days a year. A jet ski on an open sandbar offers no shelter, so follow your guide or the livery's instructions when they call riders in. Hurricane season runs from 1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September.
