What is Destin known for?

Fishing, white sand and emerald water. Destin calls itself the World's Luckiest Fishing Village, and the tourism board says Destin Harbor has the nation's largest charter fishing fleet.

The official tourism board describes Destin Harbor's fleet as the nation's largest and most elaborately equipped commercial charter fishing fleet, and notes that the 100-Fathom Curve lies about 10 miles offshore. The white sand has a story too: per the tourism board, quartz carried down the Apalachicola River system from the Appalachian Mountains was deposited along the coast, and the white sand reflecting sunlight gives the water its emerald colour. On the bay side, Crab Island, a submerged sandbar just north of the Marler Bridge, draws boats, pontoons and jet skis.

How far is Destin from Panama City Beach?

About 47 miles by road via US-98, roughly an hour's drive; traffic can make it longer.

How many days do you need in Destin?

It depends on what you want to do. A 3 to 4 day visit can fit a beach day, a jet ski tour or rental, time at Crab Island and a harbor evening, with a spare morning for weather.

• Day 1: the beach, and an evening walk around Destin Harbor to see the charter fleet.
• Day 2: a morning jet ski dolphin tour or rental, then an afternoon off the water.
• Day 3: Crab Island by boat or ski, timed for the rising tide when the water is clearest.
• Day 4: a spare morning for anything the weather moved, or a dolphin cruise for those who do not ride.

This is one way to fill the days, not a rule; a shorter stay works if the water plans are booked ahead.

Does Destin have big waves?

The bay side is a sheltered estuary and is generally calmer than the open Gulf. On the Gulf side, conditions change day to day, so check the NWS Mobile beach forecast for rip current risk.

Choctawhatchee Bay covers about 129 sq mi and connects to the Gulf through East Pass, next to Destin. The pass is where bay water meets open water, and conditions there can differ from the sheltered bay. The jet ski rentals and tours here run mostly on the bay side, around Crab Island and the sandbanks. Before a beach day or a ride, the National Weather Service office in Mobile publishes the beach and marine forecast, including rip current risk. Does Destin get hit by hurricanes?

Hurricane season runs 1 June to 30 November, peaking around 10 September. The most recent hurricane with significant documented impact on the Destin area was Sally in 2020.

Sally made landfall at Gulf Shores, Alabama, on 16 September 2020 as a strong Category 2. In Okaloosa County it brought 10 to 20+ inches of rain, surge that breached parts of US-98 on Okaloosa Island and overtopped the Fort Walton Beach seawall, and long spells of tropical-storm-force winds, per NWS Mobile. Hurricane Michael, a Category 5 in 2018, made landfall near Tyndall AFB and Mexico Beach, east of Destin. The 2025 season had no US hurricane landfalls, and through late September 2026 the season had produced tropical storms only, per the National Hurricane Center. Between mid-August and mid-October, the busiest part of the season, watch the forecast; the listings here state free cancellation up to 24 hours before.

Was Jaws 2 filmed in Destin?

Yes. Jaws 2 (1978) was filmed in Destin in 1977, with production also at Navarre Beach and on Okaloosa Island. The Truman Show was filmed in Seaside, not Destin.

The State Archives of Florida hold 1977 Florida Division of Tourism photos from the Jaws 2 shoot, and the tourism board lists the film among its locations. The Truman Show (1998) is often linked to the area, but it was filmed in Seaside, in Walton County.

When is the best time to go jet skiing in Destin?

Late spring to early autumn, when the water is warmest, and in the morning, before summer thunderstorms build later in the day.

Satellite-derived estimates put the water in the low 60s °F in February, the coldest month, about the mid 70s °F in May, and the low to mid 80s °F from June to September, peaking in the mid 80s °F in August. NWS Mobile says storms typically come in the late afternoon and evening, though they can happen at any time, and its advice for boaters is to get off the water when storms approach; if you can hear thunder, you are close enough to be struck. Morning slots avoid most of that, and Florida bans PWC riding from half an hour after sunset to half an hour before sunrise.
